The Superfood Grocer team just recently came from Ubud, Bali for some business and vacation and we just wanted to say Ubud, Bali is one of the best vegan-friendly destinations in Asia! We have been to a lot of vegan restaurants particularly in San Francisco, LA, Colorado and New York and Ubud, Bali definitely rivals the best plant based food the West have to offer. Check out what was the “best” and our favorites among all the multitude of vegan eats in Bali.
BEST SMOOTHIE: Strawberry Nut Mylkshake at CLEAR CAFE
We visited Clear Cafe for our first meal, and we kept coming back for more throughout our trip. One of the things we loved about this cafe was it’s beautiful interiors and ambiance. Order their milkshake made from nut milk and raw mudslide pie as it was simply awesome.
Their strawberries are all fresh and organic and their milk used are cashew and coconut milk, blending all these ingredients to make the perfect milkshake! Check out also some of the things we ordered on their menu, Clear has generous portions especially for Quinoa which is a super grain. They have dishes from different cuisines such as Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Mediterranean all with vegan, non-vegan or raw food options.
After the amazing meal and “Mylk Shakes”, as an added bonus try out there raw dessert pies, (100% dairy free and raw). Our favorite was the chocolate mudslide pie .
BEST SALAD: DIY SALAD at ALCHEMY
The DIY Salad at Alchemy wins our vote of best salad and this was our number one restaurant as well where we kept coming back. Alchemy is 100% Raw and Vegan meaning there are no animal products used and everything is not heated above 118 degrees for maximum nutrient preservation. At Alchemy, you pay a fixed price to make your salad and have free 4 toppings included You have the option to add more toppings if you wish, We ordered a varierty of salads but my favorite personal salad combination is greens, goji berries, pomelo, cashew parmesan, raisins, sunflower seeds and their herb vinagrette dressing. The salad came out with a very sweet taste, which is my preference there are also other dressings that you can choose to customize the taste of your salad if you want it spicy or sesame based.
Alchemy is one of the best places we have eaten at, it is very simple, down to earth and has a stream of growing regulars who frequent here. We came back to Alchemy multiple times for lunch and we enjoyed our meal every time.
BEST NOVELTY MEAL: BLT BACON BURGER at ALCHEMY
What? Bacon Burger? Man this is one of the best burgers ever, It looks weird at first as the buns are lettuce and the burger is actually dehydrated coconut. But one bite of this will blow you away and bring you back to the childhood of having bacon for breakfast. Kudo’s to Alchemy for creating this 100% raw, plant based entree.
BEST SNACK: FUNNY MONKEY COCONUT DREAM SHERBET
Walking around in Ubud town center is great, there are a lot of cheap finds similar to the Philippines. There are a lot also of fantastic artwork being sold at a very cheap or reasonable price. However, walking around it can get really hot so we chanced upon this place and it was so refreshingly good! Funny Monkey is managed by Clear Cafe as well as a sort of their smoothie/sherbet bar. They usually use either yogurt or nut milk ice cream, if you want to make it 100% dairy free just request the nut milk cream. To make their sherbet, they add fruits, coconut water, and nut milk ice cream to make this super simple but extremely delicious snack.
One great thing about this place is you can try out the sherbet/smoothie before you purchase, the sales ladies pass out this sherbet through pedestrians passing by. 100% Fresh Natural Cool and definitely delicious. Stay tuned for Part 2! (Best View, Best local dish, Best Restaurant)
