Eating plant based in Japan can be quite challenging especially if you don’t speak Japanese. All the letters in Japan are in Kanji which makes it hard to distinguish what it means. Fortunately, Tokyo has a growing health food and plant based movement with numerous establishments and cafes sprouting across the city. For this blog I’ll cover some nice plant based finds if you are staying in Shibuya or if you are close to this area.
When in Tokyo, try to check out Ts Tan Tan. Ts Tan Tan is located in the JR Tokyo Station. Don’t confuse this with the Tokyo Metro line station as I was really confused trying to find it at first. Once you realize it’s in the JR Tokyo station and accessible by purchasing a JR line ticket or via a Suica card it is relatively easy. (If you are staying in Shibuya, try to take the Yamanote straight to Tokyo Station.)
Ts Tan Tan is actually a 100% vegan restaurant serving ramen, there usually is a line going in the restaurant however the usually wait is about 5 minutes only. The place is often full since it is inside the busy JR Tokyo Station.
As you can see in the wall, there are no meat, fish eggs or milk in the menu. They do carry all your favorite Ramen flavors from miso, shoyu to spicy.
I tried the Shoyu Ramen and it was the best! I highly recommend it, I tried also the spicy Ramen on another day however I did not like it so much, the spicy Ramen I tried was not on the menu but there anniversary special bowl. The side order of brown rice includes fried veggie crisps on top made from soy meat.
After Ts Tan tan, I headed over to Pure Cafe, take the Ginza yellow line and get off at Otemesando. Pure Cafe is another all vegan cafe near Shibuya it has lunch specials, dinner specials, drinks and vegan desserts available
In Pure Cafe you order in the counter, they bring out the food really fast less than 5 minutes when I was there.
It was so good I went back on a different day again, They had a different lunch special that day as it varies day to day
After eating in Pure Cafe, I highly recommend to check out the Natural House Market right in front in the main street
Majority of all products in Natural House is organic, but I highly recommend you try out the Vegan Ice Cream made of Rice Milk inside, I got the Caramel flavor and enjoyed it very much.
